Treasure hunt for children and young adults with brain injuries

We will be holding the treasure hunt July 8th and then 9th for Camp TBI which is a camp for children and young adults with brain injuries.

I am doing a treasure hunt first with the counselors during training so that they can get oriented to the different places at camp. When they find a clue they will be given a little token that they have to bring back to the main office. When they have all of the clues they will be given a card from their main counselor that explains what each of the tokens are, for example, they will get a 'smartie' candy to let them know how smart they are. They will be given an eraser so that they know that everyone makes mistakes and it's okay. Anyway the theme of all the clues will be a 'counselor survivor kit'. The next day, the campers will do something very similar and the counselors will be giving the campers the survivor kits.

It will be held in GA, USA. I will have 70 counselors and 42 campers.

Age range of campers is 8-24

counselors 16-70.

I only glanced at the book and need to start working on it soon. I was excited to figure out how to incorporate it into our camp. Our theme this year for camp is Wild and Wacky sports so I will be changing the stations or ports to different places that have to do with sports, for example, one of the stations will be 'Green Ball Court' meaning that they have to first figure out that they have to go to the tennis courts. So they have two clues to figure out, one is where the station is, and then what the puzzle will be

Surprise treasure hunters birthday party

Nikki,

I usually plan my kid's birthdays in advance. My daughter is turning 13 this year, and decided 'last minute' to throw her a surprise birthday party. All the girls attending the party will be between 13-15 years old. We are north of Denver, Colorado, USA.

She loves that show 'Treasure Hunters' so we decided a treasure hunt theme is what we would have. I began scouring the internet for treasure hunt information, as I had an idea of what to do. I found your website, bought the online 'book', and printed it (wow lots of pages). I was happy to find something I could get immediately, because of the time constraint.

After my daughter went to bed, my husband and I began reading through it. Wow! What wonderful ideas! We have decided on 7 different locations to hide the 'puzzle pieces' and activities, along with the clues to the next location. All outside, and the puzzle will tell them to go to the (community) pool to find the treasure. That way they can swim when they have found it.

Her party is on Saturday (which is only three days away), and we are so excited. I only have to buy a few things (chocolate gold coins, necklaces, bandanas, etc) for the party. Your book (so far) has been an asset to me.

I'll let you know how the party went.

Treasure Hunt is easy ready to go package

The treasure hunt went very well, thanks! I was in a big rush, since my daughter decided last minute she'd like to have a birthday party, but we had it yesterday for a group of older teen girls. I've done several treasure hunts before--some of my own devising--but yours was a nice ready-to-go package, which is what I needed. Definitely worth the money. I especially liked your suggestions to have a variety of challenges that would speak to all the teammates various strengths. We live on 5 acres and also have various buildings that can be part of a hunt, so ours lasted about 1 1/2 hours! The girls kept very busy!

Anyway, thanks for making a good product.

Treasure hunt all ready to go

I downloaded everything yesterday and now I just have to hide all the clues in the backyard now. It's an outside treasure hunt for a 14 year old's princess party. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm thinking of adding some scavenger hunt elements to the hunt. Like finding something before solving the next riddle. A few of those riddles are going to be brain stumpers!

I'm thinking the game may take upwards of 2 hours. I did 19 clues! :)

I like the riddles type clues in the instant treasure hunt

Nikki,

I have had 1 small treasure hunt so far to 'test' it out- that was fun. Have another one planned for my grandchildren which will be at their home. 'Treasure' will be treats that each one favors! I have found your plans very easy to use- especially like the riddle-type clues.

Still talking about treasure hunt after school holidays

Hi Nikki,

We had a great party. The games we played at the party was like Amazing Race. They had to play a game to get a clue. (They collect all seven clues and put it together to find the treasure). I made passport for everyone. We traveled around the world to all seven continents. They had different ways to travel around the world. (bike, Wheel bower, skates, etc.) When they collected all the clues they had to find the treasure box that was buried.

We had two teams. I know the kids loved it we had it before our spring break, and yesterday was the first day back and they were still talking about it.

Thanks for the help and ideas.

Kids were so into treasure hunt tasks

Hi Nikki,

Yes, we did have the treasure hunt and it was a lot of fun. It was for my daughter's 9th birthday and she had 12 guests. We had wished to play it outside but the weather did not cooperate so we stayed inside my house and garage area. It worked out fine to be inside.

The kids were so into the tasks. It was really fun for me to think up creative and fun things for them to do at each city. At one city they had to pick a teammate to be wrapped up in a whole roll of toilet paper. We had an obstacle course and I even through in some math problems to figure out.

For the treasure box I was able to find a bulk bag of gold/chocolate coins to mix in with other loot. It was great and I will definitely be using the plan again in the future.

Thanks for your help.

Great treasure hunt for summer vacation

I used the Treasure Hunt Game ('The Great Hunt for Summer Vacation') for a group of 1st through 5th graders (about 80 kids) as part of our last day of school activities. They had a great time. Several kids asked me if we'll be able to do it again next year. Some of the parent volunteers and teachers encouraged me to keep all the props and signs so we can use the game again. The teachers really enjoyed it.

I'm planning to use the game once again for a class party for my son this summer ... probably with a different theme. It was easy to set up, and the challenge ideas were awesome. Thanks!

Treasure hunt for last day of school

We are planning the hunt for May - the last day of school for my 11 yr old daughter there will be 10-15 children for the hunt and they are very excited!, We have a 75 acre farm so the hunt will keep them busy finding the clues and especially the treasure!

My daughter loves pirates, and the whole concept of treasure hunting, can you give me some more ideas on what to put in the treasure box?

Scavenger hunts for both parents and children

The scavenger hunt was great! We had a huge candy bar for the team with the most points. Gum for the best turkey. Silly String for the silliest poem. Cotton candy for the sweetest good deed. Diapers filled with candy for the best babysitter stuff.

My sister lives across the street, and she took all the little brothers and sisters, and had an indoor scavenger hunt with them! Fun!

They all had fun! And, the parents had a great time! While they were gone, we had time to build a fire and go get the pizza. Perfect! Thank you for all your help!

Treasure hunt plans for the weekend

Nikki:

Have purchased your guide, and am I'm planning the treasure hunt for this weekend. Details are below.

Number of children: 8

Ages: Mostly 5-6 year old boys, plus 2 3-year old girls (who won't probably participate as much as just 'run with the pack')

Theme: Lewis & Clark/Exploring (it's my son's 6-year birthday party and he's very 'into' Lewis & Clark at present). He is also a big fan of treasure hunt-type TV programs, e.g. The Amazing Race and Treasure Hunters.

Location: We have a very large garden (>1 acre) on a hill so there are plenty of places to hide things. It's fairly 'woody' (lots of trees) around the house, so I thought to bury the treasure in one of the more woody sections, with the clues hidden more in the garden proper.

Ideas: It's not a big group so I'm not sure it makes much sense to do teams. Rather I thought (in keeping with the Lewis & Clark theme) the boys could be a band of explorers, and they all have to work together to solve the puzzles, find the clues, and locate the treasure.

What with the size of the garden and the hilly locale, the game could be pretty tiring. I'm thinking about 6 clues total - does that sound about right? Basically this is the basic plan:

* hide a series of 'artifacts' around the garden in the form of foreign coins or similar items. (This is stolen from the 'Treasure Hunters' TV show.) When the team finds the artifact, they can turn it in to me for their next clue.

The 'artifacts' would be hidden at locations that lend themselves to clues - for example, 'I'm white and curvy and used to live in the sea' (seashell), 'Where the birds go to eat' (bird feeder), etc.

* when each artifact is found, the team gets a clue to the next artifact, and a piece of the treasure map. At a couple of points in the game, the team has to either solve a puzzle or complete a task in order to get the next clue. Ideally, the tasks would be ones where the whole team could participate simultaneously (for example, the picking-up-peas game) and then once any one person (or perhaps two people?) have completed the task, then the entire team gets to move on. Other ideas I have in this genre would be kicking a soccer ball into a goal from a distance.

Thanks for your help!

Treasure chest pi?ata

Nikki,

We already had the party. It was a huge success. I thought it might be a little too young for the age group, but they really enjoyed it.

The party consisted of 10 boys ages 9-12. We hid the treasure in the house in a chest that had a lock on it. I gave them a key along with the map. We live in central California and the temp. last Sat. was 104 degrees....much too hot to do the entire hunt and party outside (this is why the treasure was inside as it took them quite a while to find it).

I put the treasure (candy and small toys) inside of a treasure chest pi?ata. When they found it, they then got to take it outside and do the pi?ata. This pi?ata was the kind that had strings attached to the bottom and the kids took turns pulling the strings until one of them released the candy. It was great. They mostly liked the stations and games that were played there. I made the pirate beach station out by the pool and incorporated the walking the plank game into the pool area.

Thanks for everything...it was well worth the money.

Pirate ship in the garage

Dear Nikki,

We had a great time!! The treasure hunt took about 3 hours to set up. I had 25 children over. We used compasses and shovels. The groups of kids went from clue to clue. Some were even tied on a balloon and placed an a pond to float around. (The actual clue was in a ziplock bag tied to a balloon) Each clue had an additional piece of a 'clue'. When each group collected all 6 pieces of their additional 'clue' we met at the main pirate ship (the garage, which was decorated). Each team put their 6 pieces of the 'clue' together (we had 6 teams so 36 pieces total). The 'clue' was Spongebob's theme song. They had to sing it. The reason for the additional clues was that a Spongebob pinata actually held the real treasure map and a key to the truck the treasure was hiding in. All the kids took a swing at spongebob and finally it broke. Candy and a treasure map an key came out. They read the map and unlocked the trunk for their treasure. The party was 3 hours long.

Thanks

Treasure hunt party in historical park

Hi Nikki-

I am planning a 'treasure hunt' party. There will be around 10 kids between the ages of 9 and 12. Some parents may stay for the party as well. We are having the party (in one of the outdoor pavilions) at a local state park. I plan to set up several stations (in the pavilion itself) where the kids have to complete a 'challenge' in order to continue (as you suggest in the original plan). The park is a historical civil war site, and has a rather long trail and about a dozen historical markers scattered along the trail. I obviously can't dig a hole at the park, and I am hesitant to place the 'treasure' along the trail for fear that someone else will encounter it and either take it or move it. Ideally, I would love for each of the kids to have a more individualized 'treasure hunt' at the end of completing the activities at the tables in the pavilion. I also thought that maybe the kids could work in pairs, and that would be good.

So here is my idea at the moment...... After breaking up into pairs, the kids would complete each of about a half dozen activities in the pavilion area. They would pick up a piece of the puzzle at the completion of each activity (again, I have no problem with devising 4 or 5 different puzzles - one individualized for each team). So, at the completion of the activities the kids will have either a map or a picture (or both) of their final destination. They would have to locate this destination and answer a question, or some other challenge type thing in order to get the treasure. Once the kids complete the final question or 'challenge' they would return to the pavilion and turn in the answer (or whatever) in order to receive their treasure. The treasure itself will be a little box that includes the party favors, so each child will get a 'treasure'. The part where I have the dilemma is what the actual final destination or challenge would be. I want it to be fun for t he kids, and not like work or a school field trip, for example.

Time hiking the trail with the markers could be an issue as well. I hiked the trail this morning, alone, and at a pretty good pace, and it took me about an hour. I only have about 3 hours for the party in all. Although I don't mind hiking a portion of the trail, and we will probably end up letting the kids do that, I don't want to be rushed, or hiking around in the woods for a large part of the party. I would rather the kids and parents relax and enjoy themselves in a more freeform way.... if that makes sense.

If you have any ideas, that would be great. I love the initial plan. It's perfect. I'm going to modify it a little to meet our particular needs.

Thanks.

So many do not know what a scavenger hunt is!

Thank you,

Everything went well. I think the item they had the most fun with was finding something with the letter M. My son's name starts with the letter M. They had about 50 questions about what they could use. Of the 25 items on their list, they were unable to get only two items a postage stamp and a 4 leaf clover. What surprised me the most was the number of parents and kids who had no idea what a Scavenger Hunt was.

Plans to have a lot more scavenger hunts

Hi Nikki,

our birthday scavenger hunt was a GREAT success. Your material gave me lots to choose from and I was grateful. I used the treasure map for the invitations and rolled them up to hand out. The list was on the treasure map and it was 8 items to look for or info to find and 8 were photos to take to make memories & proof of it getting done. It was a teen girl team against teen guy team and the playing field was the city of Wichita, KS so they had a certain time to be back complete or not and the one with the most done was the winner. They all came back with wonderful stories and had lots of fun. I learned though that the guy against girl wasn't the best cause the guys were too COOL to do some of the list, but the things they did they had FUN! Whereas if they had mixed teams the girls would have persuaded them into doing everything.

While planning this double birthday party it has prompted other ideas one for our leadership Christmas party at church promoting unity & working together to accomplish a task.

Also I have talked with our the coordinator who is up for the idea of a scavenger hunt during next summer's Family Reunion. Should be loads of fun.

Thanks for the great info! I am going to try to send a photo let me know if it makes it.

Hi Nikki,

We live in the USA, in Moore, OK. The party is this Saturday the 23rd.

It is a surprise birthday party for my son who turned 13 last Sunday.

There will be mostly 13 to 14 year olds but a few younger and some older siblings at the party, and of course aunts and uncles to help drive for the scavenger hunt.

I have read over the planner and am trying to decide which one I want to do. I really like the one they have to find something for each letter of the alphabet.

Yacht club cruise and treasure hunt

We had our pirate treasure hunt game this week-end on our yacht club cruise. We did all the planning, purchasing the treasure and put it together in 3 days with very late nights, but it was a huge success. Everyone had a great time. Thank-you for all the great ideas and for all the flexibility to the game, it was easily adaptable to our space, weather and various abilities of our players. Treasure hunt planner was user friendly

We had our treasure hunt Sat night. It was great. The students enjoyed it and so did the adults that were working the different stations. I was so relieved to have something already complete and ready to use. It was user friendly. We changed the font and copied it onto brown aged paper and it looked so real. We had middle school age and college age. They all enjoyed it. We had the stations set up among a pirate town and they had to go through the town to complete. We used it to eliminate the teams to two and the two completed a treasure hunt that was extra. Thank you for such a good product.

Your product sounds terrific, but I'm at a loss as to which version to purchase. Our volunteer fire department has an annual Homecoming (fund-raiser) and I'm planning a scavenger hunt. The age range could be 10 to 18. Would the 'kids' option be too young if I split the group or would I be able to modify per your examples?

Sincerely,

Hi Bethany

If you are referring to our Treasure Hunt Party Game, I suggest the adult / all ages version would work fine for a group of 10 -18 year olds. We do also have a scavenger hunt product.

There are some differences between our major ebook products: Treasure Hunt and Scavenger Hunt. The Treasure Hunt Party Game is based around six locations, at each location, the teams are required to complete a challenge or puzzle in order to win pieces of a clue. The clue pieces when put together will lead them to the treasure map and then onto the treasure. The Scavenger Hunt game is about collecting items or completing tasks on a list. Teams compete to complete the list, or to earn points in a given timeframe. The game style is your choice.

Best wishes

Nikki

Treasure hunt for last day of school

We are planning the hunt for May - the last day of school for my 11 yr old daughter there will be 10-15 children for the hunt and they are very excited!, We have a 75 acre farm so the hunt will keep them busy finding the clues and especially the treasure!

My daughter loves pirates, and the whole concept of treasure hunting, can you give me some more ideas on what to put in the treasure box?

I plan on burying the treasure by an old cabin that's been here since before Oklahoma was a state! I call it blackbeard's haunted hideout! Makes things more interesting for the kids!

Wonderful details of the treasure hunt

Hi Nikki.

I made the treasure map out of an over-sized yellow envelope (I'd say 11x14). Since it was darker in color, it already had a yellowed aged look about it. I used a thin permanent marker and free hand the area. A pool was located in the backyard so I drew waves representing the pool and upside down 'V's' to represent the mountains. Where the treasure map was buried, I drew a skull and cross-bones, then drew arrows representing the path that had to be taken to get to the X that marks the spot for the treasure. I had made a cup of hot tea and left the tea bag in the cup. Once the tea cooled, I used the tea bag to blot the treasure map and created a molted brown look. Because the teabag made the map wet, I let it dry overnight and it was fairly stiff. I then put the map over the stove burner to create burn spots. This was perfect because it made the map heavy enough to bury and strong enough for hand to pull it open excitedly without ripping it.

I created a treasure chest by purchasing a disposable ice cooler at a local dollar store. We bought brown paint and painted the cooler (the Styrofoam began to melt the cooler temporarily and it actually worked well since it looked very aged). I purchased 6 individual treasure chests (assuming no more than 6 kids to a team) and put in only two filled treasure chests at the bottom of the cooler with marbles, fake jewels, chocolate coins and coin bubble gum on top of the individual treasure chests). I kept the remaining treasure chests aside to present one to each team member that won.

Whatever team won, we brought all the teams over so they could see the opening of the treasure and share the booty with the other teams. I had also prepared a individual bag of goodies for all participants that included a mardi gras type beaded necklace, chocolate coins, gums and since the Pirates of the Caribbean is still a hot item I located bags of M&Ms that had pirate stuff on them. For the winning teams they not only got their own filled treasure chest but I was able to locate an inexpensive prize for them.

How we conducted the hunt was the train schedule was pinned to a tall hedge (I used clothes pins and wanted them all at one location so the kids did not have to scramble around looking for them as well as locating the stations).

I made up instructions and clues for each team member using colored paper that represented each team (blue paper for blue team, pink paper for red team, yellow for yellow, etc). For the clues I purchased an inexpensive laminator and laminated the uncut clues as well as made an uncut clue in the same color. I then cut the laminated clues into 6 pieces (I gave two pieces of the puzzle to each task master as they could easily determine what team did not do a task and each task master was responsible for 2 tasks). I thought this would be easy for smaller hands to hold and put together than paper pieces that they would loose, crumble or possibly tear. The laminated pieces were for the kids to put the clues together, but once their clues were actually put together they were given the paper clue that was not cut so they could run around with it and find the treasure map.

The teams were decided by whatever strip of paper they pulled from a hat. I cut up a certain number of strips of paper for each colored team. Based upon number the total number of kids that participated I had 4 teams and some teams had 3 kids and others had 4. Each team was given a set of instructions printed on colored paper that represented their team color. Each team was given a pencil. Not only did they get a chance to read their instructions, I announced the instructions. I explained that team work will come into play and they should consider having one person designated for different things (as the game wore on, they figured out that it was easy for one person to be responsible for writing down the combination, one person for holding the clues).

The teams were told that they must follow the schedule, they must complete each task, they will be given a piece of the clue, but before they could work on their puzzle, they needed to see the see the Gate Keeper to give the code. If the code was not correct they were not allowed work on their puzzle and they must go back to the schedule and see where they went wrong.

Once the first team successfully got all the pieces, provided the correct combination code that team then could put their laminated pieces together. Once the laminated pieces were put together, I then gave that team a whole uncut copy so they could run around and look for the treasure map. Once that team found the map all other teams were told that the map was found.

Once the actual treasure was found, all the teams were invited to watch the winning team open their treasure. The winning team was congratulated and advised that winners should share their booty with the others.

I had made enough little loot bags for each participating member so that each person would have consolation prize (can you image not having a prize for each child because I knew they would make me walk the plank!).

All the parents that stayed and watch were amazed and impressed.

It definitely took longer than a half hour and you need bodies to help make it run smoothly.

I think it went off well for the first time. I had family member and friends saying they wanted to have their own scavenger hunt.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for holding my hand and walking me through this step by step.

Thanks!

Treasure hunt party in the local park

Hi Nikki

I am thinking of organising a treasure hunt for my daughters 11th birthday, how big an open space do we need? We could do it in the local park.

Great pirate treasure hunt

Originally I was going to use the Treasure Hunt and plan a 'Trip to Britain' with a Visa as an invitation and serve fish and chips in Newspaper. My son didn't really get that whole theme so we are going with the Pirate Treasure Hunt you sent me which he is very excited about. Glad I got both-thanks so much

I found a great web site 'deadmentellnotales.com' which has pirate stuff galore' so prop wise we are well on our way (I even got Pirate music from the web site). I think I will put a lock on the treasure chest anyway, and give out three numbers at some of the stations. With three numbers they should be able to work out the different combinations and open the chest.

I won't do teams, they will all work together. I would like to add one additional station. I like the mummy idea from the regular game-do pirates do anything similar?

Do you have suggestions for food at a Pirate party?

I am having a great time planning this party and couldn't have done it properly without your assistance.

Now I just need to learn to talk and act like a pirate!
